Activity #4: Linking to webpages and documents

These instructions assume you are logged into the Health Sciences Drupal Training website. After completing these edits, your page will look closer to the “Dogs - Final Version” page.

Link to a webpage within your site

  1. Navigate to your training page
  2. Click on the Edit tab [Screenshot]
  3. Highlight the words “Learn more about the web team’s dogs” with your cursor
  4. Click on the Link to Content button (otherwise known as the Link It button) in the toolbar [Screenshot]
  5. Type Web Team Dogs in the search for content field [Screenshot]
  6. Click on the Web Team Dogs page
    1. Note that the Link URL field will populate with the Drupal ID for the content (a Node) [Screenshot]
  7. Click on Insert
  8. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Link to a webpage outside of your your site

  1. Navigate to your training page
  2. Click on the Edit tab [Screenshot]
  3. Highlight the words “visit the Wikipedia dog page” with your cursor
  4. Click on the Insert/Edit Link button in the toolbar [Screenshot]
  5. Paste https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog into the URL field
    1. NOTE: It’s always best to visit the URL to make sure it is going to the correct webpage and then copying and pasting the URL from your browser into the Drupal URL field
  6. Click Insert
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save” 

Link to a document

You have already uploaded the document in a past activity.

  1. Navigate to your training page
  2. Click on the Edit tab [Screenshot]
  3. Highlight the words “Download an overview of dog anatomy”
  4. Click on the Link to Content button (otherwise known as the Link It button) in the toolbar [Screenshot]
  5. Type Dog in the search for content field [Screenshot]
    1. Note that the results start populating after three characters
    2. It’s best to name your files with dashes in between the words because of the way Drupal creates URLs for documents.
  6. Click on the dog-document.pdf
  7. Click on Insert
  8. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Add a style to a link

  1. Navigate to your training page
  2. Click on the Edit tab [Screenshot]
  3. Highlight “Learn more about the web team’s dogs”
  4. Select “Link: Emphasis” from the styles drop-down menu [Screenshot]
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Remove a link

  1. Highlight the link text
  2. Click on the Unlink button in the toolbar. [Screenshot
